Two Michelin-starred Opheem in Birmingham, led by Chef Aktar Islam is to debut in London this spring.
Alongside Gymkhana, Opheem is one of just two Indian restaurants in Britain to hold two Michelin stars, and one of just four globally.
Oudh 1722 is to open in the former Lupin’s site in Borough Market on the site of Lupin, a modern British restaurant which closed before Christmas after almost a decade.
Whereas Opheem is a distinctly modern and inventive pan-Indian concept, Islam’s latest project will focus on Awadhi cuisine from the north of India, notably Lucknow.
The historic style is heavily influenced by Persian cooking and rooted in the old royal courts. Dishes are typically subtle and fragrant, while slow-cooking is a hallmark.
“Awadhi cuisine represents a rich culinary tradition I have always deeply respected, yet one rarely seen in its authentic form here in the UK,” said Iktar, adding, “With Oudh 1722, the intention is to bring the flavours of Awadh to London, drawing on the techniques, generosity and sense of hospitality that defined the Nawabi courts of Lucknow.”
